Capital Digestive Care Welcomes Kelly Nelson, CRNP

Kelly Nelson, CRNP

Kelly Nelson, CRNP, was inspired to pursue a career in nursing by her father. During his hospital stays, he spoke highly of the medical staff, especially the nurses. Kelly knew then that she wanted to provide the same comfort and care to other people and their family members in times of need.

Today, Kelly is a board-certified adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner with a background in critical care nursing who provides general gastroenterology care. She is passionate about preventive medicine, patient education, and patient-centered care.

Kelly earned a bachelor of science in health education and behavior from the University of Florida in Gainesville. She then went on to earn an accelerated bachelor of science in nursing and a master of science in nursing, both from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Before joining Capital Digestive Care, Kelly worked as a nurse in the intensive care unit (ICU) and medical intermediate care unit (IMCU) at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. While there, she also served as a clinical coach and resource nurse to her ICU and IMCU colleagues.

“My priority as a provider is that my patients feel empowered in their treatment plan and that they have a clear understanding of their condition,” Kelly said. “We, provider and patient, will achieve this through mutual trust, collaboration, and education.”

Kelly is a member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She enjoys traveling, reading, trying new restaurants in DC, and spending time with her significant other and their cat, Theo.
