The pancreas is a large gland behind the stomach. It helps your body digest food by creating enzymes, and it regulates blood sugars. Pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas becomes inflamed due to problems with the enzymes it produces. Pancreatitis can be acute (short term) or chronic (long term).
